EU moves to reduce accidents

As a truck professional, you want to stay ahead of the game in comfort and safety. So you are probably aware of the impending new retrofit EU regulations governing improvements in the radius of wide angle mirrors and the fitting of kerb mirrors on commercial vehicles. The retrofit regulations stipulate that all commercial vehicles above 3.5 t first registered after January 1, 2000, need to be equipped with wide angle and kerb mirrors that meet the new legislation, before April 2009. This is an addition to the front view mirror legislation introduced in January 2007.

The new wide angle and kerb mirror directive at reducing the high incidence of serious and fatal accidents caused when trucks make left-hand turns, change lanes to overtake or revert to the left-hand lanes after overtaking. The new directive improves the driver’s visibility of persons or objects in close proximity to the driver’s cab. Pedestrians – particularly the young and elderly – are especially vulnerable in nearside turns, as are cyclists and motorcyclists. And even quite large cars can be hidden in a blind spot when trucks try to pull out in heavy traffic.

The wide angle glass

For the XF and CF it is strongly recommended that the mirror assembly is changed for safety and ease the fitment. By replacing the existing glass with its 400 mm radius with glass with a greater 300 mm radius the truck complies to the minimum requirements of the new legislation. This is the legal bare minimum you have to comply with. This is not the best option as it does not completely cover the new legal requirements.

The wide angle mirror

By replacing the complete wide angle mirror of the XF or CF the truck fully complies with the new vision field and meets the latest specifications. For the LF the complete mirror head must always be replaced.

Kerb mirror

The kerb mirror does NOT need to be replaced for the XF and CF. For the LF the kerb mirror must always be replaced.

The complete mirror arm

Going one step further, it may be just as well to fit a complete new Euro 4/5 mirror arm, including the wide angle mirror. This way the truck gets the newest design and complies with the latest specifications. It is an upgrade for the truck with a better lens, a firmer bar and less chance of vibration. This is only an option for the XF and CF and meets the new legislation.

The camera system

By fitting a video camera system forclose proximity detection of people and objects the driver chooses the best option in design, comfort and safety. Of course it also meets the legal requirements. Technically the camera system is the best solution which will also give the truck thewidest field of vision.

All makes

DAF doesn’t only offer a solution for its own trucks. The TRP program offers an All Makes mirror program. A complete overview by brand and model can be found on www.checkyourmirror.com. With this information you can easily retrofit your total fleet to the new legislation at your nearest DAF dealer.
