EU moves to reduce accidents
As a truck professional, you want to stay ahead of the game in comfort and safety. So you are probably aware of the impending new retrofit EU regulations governing improvements in the radius of wide angle mirrors and the fitting of kerb mirrors on commercial vehicles. The retrofit regulations stipulate that all commercial vehicles above 3.5 t first registered after January 1, 2000, need to be equipped with wide angle and kerb mirrors that meet the new legislation, before April 2009. This is an addition to the front view mirror legislation introduced in January 2007.
The new wide angle and kerb mirror directive at reducing the high incidence of serious and fatal accidents caused when trucks make left-hand turns, change lanes to overtake or revert to the left-hand lanes after overtaking. The new directive improves the driver’s visibility of persons or objects in close proximity to the driver’s cab. Pedestrians – particularly the young and elderly – are especially vulnerable in nearside turns, as are cyclists and motorcyclists. And even quite large cars can be hidden in a blind spot when trucks try to pull out in heavy traffic.
